At 68, Weir in song and deed seemed more unstoppable than ever. Led by The National’s Aaron Dessner who has missed tour dates, including Wednesday’s, due to a family emergency and been replaced by Weir stalwarts Steve Kimock and Jon Shaw on lap steel, mandolin, piano, and upright bass , the team behind Weir provided a slow-stewing tornado of subtle ambience and undulating rhythm. The band, bouncing between five and eight men, touched upon joyously eerie elements of country, bluegrass, ragtime, chunky funk and unfettered blues with quiet brio. Weir was the calm but electric eye of that insistent storm. At this point in his long career, Weir could’ve just played the Dead’s old-man-of-the-mountain bit by rote for the patchouli-and-sensimilla-scented, tie-dye-hued masses. Deadheads can attest that solo Weir in the past has been as off and he’s been on. Wednesday, though, Weir seemed buoyed by Blue Mountain’s deeply personal inspiration – true-life tales Weir lived and learned as a year-old ranch hand in Wyoming. He opened the show solo with a warbling take on Son House’s “Walkin’ Blues” and a growly, Dylan-lite “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” then blossomed when he hit upon his new album’s quietly strummed title tune.

Thanks for having me. Deadheads is the type of movie every actor wants to get on. It is an adventure movie! Add to that, the snappy dialogue— that I am sure will be quoted for years to come—and you have a pop culture served zombie style. First of All, can you tell us your name and who you play in Deadheads? Ellie is the sweet girl-next-door who is slightly clumsy and awkward in her own way. She was fun to play. So how did it come to be that you would appear in Deadheads?
I was cast in a theatre show in Los Angeles. About 30minutes before show time, we discovered one of our comedic actresses had decided not to show up due to a personal meltdown. Her scene partner, who happened to be an insanely talented comedian, was furious and threatened to walk out. You see I had never done comedy before that evening. So I had 30 minutes to get my funny on!
They had received a last minute invite to the show, and decided why the heck not?

He is watching the drunk teenagers fight and dance around the bonfire and he lets out a laugh when an obviously drunk Clint trips over his feet and falls on his face. Newts attention turns to his boyfriend Thomas and friend Minho who are standing on the other side of the bonfire. Thomas is leaning on Minho for support, being too drunk to stand up properly. He is saying something to Minho as he is pointing towards Newt which makes Minho snicker and nod.
Suddenly Thomas is walking, or rather stumbling towards Newt.

I was stuck and I was late. I tossed a jealous glare out my window towards those lucky folks going south racing along at an unthinkable speed of 40 MPH. I turned on the traffic report it felt as useful as listening to the weather report during a rainstorm and looked over at the clock on my dashboard — I was really late now — and then I peeked back over to those lucky southbound drivers.
Then I asked myself the two questions I ask myself when my life hits a skid, big or small: My life is blessed with so many wonderful gifts: My answer is always yes. By this time tomorrow, will whatever it is that’s bothering me and causing so much frustration still matter? My answer is usually no. This, too, shall pass. In the big picture there is so much to be thankful for, even while sitting trapped in the car watching the minutes roll by: In the thick of a setback it pays to focus on the positive rather than to wallow in a negative.
The traffic thinned a bit and I was gratefully moving at a pace faster than a limp. Then I realized how silly I was to even look at the traffic on the other side of the divide.

The band was born in , the same year I was, and many of the Deadheads I met at Northwestern University, with whom I toured over the years, were headed back to our old stomping ground at Soldier Field. So when my editor asked me to check out one of the three live simulcasts of the shows from the Palace 9 Theater in South Burlington , I was more than game and picked the final show.
That night in August , I watched a red, white and blue meteorite shoot across the Texas sky, smoked a joint and hung up my tie-dye for good. Or so I thought. On Sunday night, I showed up at the Palace 9 parking lot slightly after 6 p. As they navigated their way past three shiny Toyota Priuses Priuii? What would it be like if Bernie Sanders , Vermont’s independent senator and presidential contender who’s also in the Midwest this week , were allowed to address the tens of thousands of Deadheads at Chicago’s Soldier Field on the Fourth of July? With just the right speechwriters — and a little help from Vermont’s senior senator and veteran deadhead , Patrick Leahy — it might go a little something like this: This country faces more serious problems today than at any time since the Great Depression.
The Wall Street billionaire class has become a friend of the devil and turned our great nation, this American beauty, into a brokedown palace. Today, we have more income and wealth inequality than any other major country on Earth, where the gap between the very rich and everyone else is wider than at any time since the s.

Brandon Marshall The place was pleasantly busy on that Saturday afternoon, but the bartender told us it was actually kind of slow for happy hour. We sat at the bar among a cast of characters including a couple of tie-dye-wearing dudes with beards and sweat-stained baseball hats, a group of tourists having a “girls’ weekend,” and some gray-haired guys decked out in full ensembles of college sports gear from different teams, despite the fact that the bar only contains one rather inconspicuous TV and they were not watching the game.
The rest of the large, open area on the other side of the bar also had a healthy crowd of people playing pool and foosball, and a guy silently eating a bag of Church’s chicken on one of the plastic-covered couches. For some reason, no one was playing the air hockey game that somehow magically fits in the space as part of a jigsaw puzzle that also contains three pool tables and two foosball tables. Everyone looked like they had just come directly from backcountry skiing, which is probably how the clientele at Sancho’s could be described most days.
We chatted with the bartender, whose name is Phil, just like the late co-founder of the bar, Phil Bianchi. He says that people call him “Re-Phil,” get it? Re-Phil was wearing a “Taylor Swift or Die” shirt and told us his goal is “just trying to uphold the bar’s reputation for shitty service. But back to the original Phil: Phil Bianchi, and his brothers Jay and Aric.
The three brothers, bonded together by their love of all things Grateful Dead, decided to open the bar in to make their own “Cheers for Deadheads. Sancho’s was added to the roster when the space on Colfax, which previously housed an establishment called the Gold Nugget Country Disco which sounds impressively terrible , became available.

In a voice that nearly melts with each word, she talks about finding peace and love–prospects that the streets of San Francisco promised but have not delivered. Like hundreds of runaways and disenfranchised young people, Star–barely calls this historic haven of hippiedom home. Most days, this caricature of a flower child wanders through Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix’s old stomping grounds.
Most nights, she huddles in a makeshift village in nearby Golden Gate Park. For the most part, denizens of the street, like Star, are Deadheads–nomadic followers of the music and anything-goes lifestyle of the infamous Grateful Dead rock group. When one of the post-Dead bands goes on what is called The Furthur Show, Star and hundreds like her travel across the country to see the performance.
Didion alternated her assignment on the movies with another writer, which seems to have prevented her from reviewing memorable films. She was trying to write with flair, though, in short spaces, and most of the reviews are sprightly, wisecracking things that seem more like Parker than Didion.
