EMAIL Well, I certainly got more than I bargained for when I invited those of you who did not or did like my last story to set my punishment for writing it. Fritz, of course post , was totally over the top yet he always wants to know why he has a reputation for brutality that exceeds even mine. My demise seemed to concern no one except Stan post Others were not so quick to end my torment. The line was not mine, but that of a character in a story, yet he now wants me to pay for it by having my arms bound behind my back, elbows touching painful!! And Provost post does not mince words: Now that would be torture!! And then Ralphus finally returns post after giving everyone a scare, and, in his first post back, he notices the likelihood that I am dead. Well, the truth is that I was able to evade the threats to my safety posed and posted by Fritz, MadBob , Brainmaster and Provost.

On more than one occasion I have grumbled about movie reviews written by critics who watch three hundred movies a year and, after a decade or two of this, start to judge movies primarily on whether they contain something the critic hasn’t seen before.
Bakhtin and his circle began meeting in the Belorussian towns of Nevel and Vitebsk in before moving to Leningrad in Their group meetings were terminated due to the arrest of many of the group in From this time until his death in , Bakhtin continued to work on the topics which had occupied his group, living in internal exile first in Kustanai Kazakhstan, , Savelovo about km from Moscow, , Saransk Mordovia, , and finally moving in to Moscow, where he died at the age of eighty.
The Bakhtin circle is reputed to have been initiated by Kagan on his return from Germany, where he had studied philosophy in Leipzig, Berlin and Marburg. Kagan established a “Kantian Seminar” at which various philosophical, religious and cultural issues were discussed. Kagan was a Jewish intellectual who had been a member of the Social Democratic Party the precursor of the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks and he may have been attracted to Cohen’s philosophy for its supposed affinity with Marxism Cohen regarded his ethical philosophy as completely compatible with that of Marx , while rejecting the atheism of Russian Communism.
Whatever the truth of the matter, the members of the circle did not restrict themselves to academic philosophy but became closely involved in the radical cultural activities of the time, activities which became more intense with the movement of the group to Vitebsk, where many important avant-garde artists such as Malevich and Chagall had settled to avoid the privations of the Civil War.
One of the group, Pavel Medvedev, a graduate in law from Petrograd University, became rector of the Vitebsk Proletarian University, editing the town’s cultural journalIskusstvo Art to which he and Voloshinov contributed articles, while Bakhtin and Pumpianskii both gave public lectures on a variety of philosophical and cultural topics, as seen in recently published student notes. Pumpianskii, it is known, never finished his studies at Petrograd university, while it is doubtful whether Bakhtin had any formal higher education at all despite his claims, now disproven, to have graduated from the same University in It seems that Bakhtin attempted to gain acceptance in academic circles by adopting aspects of his older brother’s biography.
Nikolai Bakhtin had a solid classical education from his German governess and graduated from Petrograd University, where he had been a pupil of the renowned classicist F. Bakhtin had therefore been exposed to philosophical ideas since his youth. After Nikolai’s departure for the Crimea, and Mikhail’s move to Nevel, it seems that Kagan took the place of his brother as unofficial mentor, having an important influence on Bakhtin’s philosophy in a new and exciting cultural environment, although the two friends went their separate ways in , the year Bakhtin married.
April 25, 5: The interview was conducted by Raymie Stata. One of the problems historically with Objectivism is that it is a broad, systematic philosophy but often does not address the kinds of very specific technical questions that are being discussed in philosophy or psychology or economics. Now, some of these questions are just invalid from a philosophic standpoint.
But as a student you want to know:
The Bakhtin Circle. The Bakhtin Circle was a 20th century school of Russian thought which centered on the work of Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin ().

Is it against Objectivist principles to date non-Objectivists? I think you are referring to the following ” Tell me what a man finds sexually attractive and I will tell you his entire philosophy of life” p. In the early Objectivist movement, many people understood this principle to mean that one should only be attracted to people who were Objectivists in their explicit philosophical convictions. I think the real meaning of this is deeper and more subtle.
The real philosophy that stands behind a person’s character is his sense of life, an emotional, intuitive complex of deep-seated value-judgments and orientations toward the world and others. Most people do not act consistently on their conscious religion or philosophy, and indeed most do not really take abstract ideas very seriously. What we respond to in others in friendship and romance is founded on sense of life. We don’t love someone because they say they are productive, we love them because we see their wonderful engagement with the world and their proactive attitude toward their values.
We don’t love somebody because they say they are an atheist, we love them for their down-to-earth attitude to life. We don’t love them because they say happiness is the ultimate value, we love them because they are joyful and give us joy.

Ancient Greece Ancient Greece was the birthplace of Western philosophical ethics. The ideas of Socrates c. The sudden flowering of philosophy during that period was rooted in the ethical thought of earlier centuries. In the poetic literature of the 7th and 6th centuries bce, there were, as in other cultures, moral precepts but no real attempts to formulate a coherent overall ethical position. The Greeks were later to refer to the most prominent of these poets and early philosophers as the seven sages , and they are frequently quoted with respect by Plato and Aristotle.

How can I efficiently evaluate potential romantic prospects? When introduced to a person — or out on a first or second date — it’s often difficult to evaluate that person quickly and fairly as a potential romantic prospect. What should I look for? What questions should I ask? What kinds of qualities — moral and psychological — should I regard as particularly important, for better or worse? I know, I know: I really should’ve nailed this down before agreeing to the date, but I guess I just figured that, since I didn’t understand you, you had to be female. But you have to look at me before we do it. You have to look at me in the eyes, Terry. I’m not a whore. I recognized the Virgin Airlines and Skechers logos emblazoned beneath each nipple, but the rest were unfamiliar, and I didn’t feel like they engaged me socially, so I didn’t pay any attention to them.

It seems, then, that realism and empiricism can’t be reconciled. Realism logically leads to rationalism and, as a result, does not allow for theory-independent observations. Nominalism The traditional alternative to realism has been nominalism. This is the view that concepts, such as “brown”, are names that we give to groupings of objects which, in reality, do not have anything in common groupings which are either arbitrary or based on some vague “resemblances”.
As opposed to the discovery model of concept-formation, implied by realism, nominalism clearly leads to a construction model. Since the concept is not based on reality, there is nothing to discover; the concept’s content has to be created by the definition we give it, by the user’s criteria for including objects under it.
Kent’s lack of social skills and extremely rational outlook on life rubs people the wrong way, citing that his relationship with the heroine is terrible and that they should break up.
The Question is a clearly Objectivist super-hero who was created by devoutly Objectivist comic book artist Steve Ditko. Peter Sanderson, “Comics in Context Miller also uses the Question, whom Steve Ditko created for Charlton comics. Ditko’s treatment of the Question was founded in his enthusiasm for Ayn Rand’s brand of conservative political philosophy. When DC acquired the Charlton heroes in the s, the Question was recast as a liberal; I recall one “Question” letter column in which the editor argues that by that point DC had done more “Question” stories than Ditko, so their interpretation was by now correct.
This seems a prime case of a character being radically altered from his creator’s intentions. Commendably, Miller returns the Question to his philosophical roots. Actually, Miller takes him further than Ditko did. The Question was the basis for the more fanatical Rorschach in Alan Moore’s Watchmen, a book known to have influenced Miller, and Rorschach, in his moral views and manner of speaking, seems to have inspired Miller’s Question. Matt ‘Stars’ Morrison, “The Mount: The other night, some fellow geeks and I got to talking about some political matters in addition to the usual shop talk and this question was raised: Now, there are a few obvious gimmies
